LANSING - 21-year-old Christopher Patrick Fandel of Portland is in critical condition in a Lansing hospital Friday, after being shot in the neck Wednesday night.
Fandel and an unidentified 18-year-old woman were in the front seat of his parked car at the intersection of Hillsdale and Walnut Streets, expecting to meet a friend. The woman told police they wound up meeting with an acquaintance of that friend. The man got into the back seat. While they were driving, police say the man pulled out a gun and tried to rob the couple. Fandel was shot while driving and struggling with the gunman.
The female passenger managed to steer the car to a stop. The gunman ran off and was not located.
Police continue to interview witnesses, but have so far not been able to identify a suspect.
