GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A South Carolina artist will meet with Grand Rapids officials during the next week in an effort to find a place to put his sculpture of a local man killed in Vietnam.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that the sculpture of Dennis Lobbezoo was made by Dr. Edward Byrd. Several groups are interested in housing the work. Byrd is scheduled to meet on Monday with city administrators to discuss possible sites.

Byrd was a general medical officer on the USS Repose in 1968 when he met Lobbezoo and other Marines who were flown in with non-life threatening wounds. Four months later, Byrd learned Lobbezoo was killed in action.

He made the bronze sculpture decades later of Lobbezoo that's 27 inches long and 14 inches high.
