Scrapfest Kicks Off in Old Town

To the untrained eye, the heaping pile of old and twisted metal objects looked like trash.

But to Ian Markiw, it might as well have been Christmas morning.

"It's all here, just got to figure out how to use it," he said.

Ian, along with his friend were one of 13 teams of artists sifting through the scraps at the Friedland Industries scrapyard Saturday as part of the 5th annual Scrapfest in Old Town.

And Markiw said there's a method to the seeming madness.

"Going though there, we're kind of looking 'alright this will work for this part of the sculpture, that'll work for the other part,'" Markiw said. "We're just going through and figuring out what is we got to grab to make it happen."

The teams were let loose for just one hour to find as many items as they could--from old bikes to appliances and other old metal items--to ultimately to create an art sculpture.

The sculptures will be displayed at the upcoming Festival of the Moon and Sun on June 21 and 22 where individuals will be able to bid on the pieces of art in an auction.

"It's been a great time," said Mike Bass, manager of Friedland Industries. "The artists tend to outdo themselves every year and their abilities increase every year so it's nice to see."

The event proving that, no doubt, one old adage in particular still holds true.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure," Markiw said. "I've been building stuff out of spare parts for years so I feel like a kid in a candy store."

The teams will have two weeks to assemble the items they collected at the event to create a sculpture.
