KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) -- A robotic systems company has opened a design and service center in the Grand Rapids area.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that Traverse City-based TranTek Automation last month opened a facility near the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Kentwood. It marks a return to the area for the company, which closed a site in Walker in 2009 during the economic downturn.

Fred Leishman is TranTek vice president of sales. He says the company has added employees to meet growing demand.

The company designs and builds high-tech handling, assembly and welding systems for the automotive and defense industries. It wanted a presence near the airport as it expands so it will be closer to customers and potential workers.

TranTek employs 51 people. The Kentwood center has three.
