JACKSON (WILX)-- After nearly averaging one violent crime a day for two weeks in Jackson, one neighborhood has had enough. Thursday night members of the 5th ward got together with police and their city council representative Andrew Frounfelker to look for solutions.

Crime in Jackson is on the rise. Some residents living in what's considered the city's crime hot spots say they are afraid for their lives.

"Out here people are shooting in the neighborhood like they just don't care," said Jackson resident Ingrid Smith.

It's because of people like Smith that Frounfelker decided to hold a crime meeting.

"I figured this is the time to get in front of this before it becomes too much of a problem," said Frounfelker.

According to Jackson Police weapon offenses are up 25%, controlled substance abuse is up 33%, and robbery is up 38% percent from last year.

"A lot of this violence has been targeted and it's not random. I don't want anyone to feel like they are hostage in their house," said Frounfelker.

Recent crime in the area include stolen firearms from Schupbach's Sporting Goods, a fire fight on Adrian street, and a case of breaking and entering in Jackson High School.

Jackson Police are trying to do as much as they can but are suffering under budget restraints. They have officers working overtime in the city's crime hot spots but it's not enough. That's why police tried to focus on how the community can help in Thursdays meeting.

"Make sure they are good witnesses, they they are involved and contact us with information and that they are willing to talk to us," said Director of Jackson Police and Fire Matt Heins.

Hopefully by getting the word out a difference can be made.

According to Jackson Police records for 2013 most crimes in the area are reported on Tuesdays and Fridays, and most incidents occur around 4 p-m and 8 p-m this year.
