Republican Senators Block House Vote to Cut 1,000 DHS Workers

Republicans in the Michigan Senate have no plans to cut more than 1,000 jobs from the state agency that handles welfare and food assistance.

A budget approved Tuesday by a Senate panel would reduce staff by about 270 jobs. It's not as drastic a reduction as in a budget passed earlier in the day by a House subcommittee.

Differences will be resolved before lawmakers' self-imposed June deadline to approve the state budget.

The House plan would cut more than 1,000 jobs from the Department of Human Services. Democrats say the proposal is dangerous, and a department spokesman says it's a "pretty hard body blow."

House Republicans say cuts are needed because they won't support Snyder's call for a surcharge on power bills to cover heating aid for low-income residents.

For every $100 a person gets from the government they ahve to do 1 hour of community service. That is not a bad trade off.

Those folks on welfare need to be put on a program where they do Public Service for the Tax Money(OWE-BOMA BUCKS) that they receive. Some would make good guards in our schools cuz who wants to deal with and get past a grumpy-ol-welfare person having to earn their keep. Just a thought

Wahh-wahh. There have been way too many governent "workers" for years! their pay, benefits and retirement costs are not sustainable. So, eliminate around 60 percent of these vultures and get the budget balanced! Thank You. Ricardo.

Unfortunately, this article fails to indicate which senators are against these necessary cuts to the State budget. If these elected officials are too timid and weak to make the necessary spending cuts, then they should resign. How much longer will the few be expected to pay for the many?
