The parking lots surrounding Kelly-Shorts Stadium in Mount Pleasant were completely full, Saturday, as a record number of Spartans and Chippewas prepared for the historic match-up between their beloved football teams.

Andrew Stone setup his site on the stadium's south side, early. An avid tailgater since 1988, Stone has not missed a Michigan State home game in 25 years. On Saturday, he brought his party to CMU's campus.

"I got family from Central," said Stone. "We knew a lot of our diehards would be here, the Spartan nation represents well."

Over on the north side, lifelong Central Michigan fan and former Chippewa wide receiver, Dan Odykirk, was happy to finally get the chance to welcome Spartans to his alma mater.

"They get to come here and we get to show a little of how we do it and extend our hospitality because Michigan State has done it to us a lot of years," said Odykirk, who has two sons currently on the Central Michigan team. "It gives us the chance to do it one time."

With tailgating, comes the possibility of arguments between fans and the Central Michigan Police Department is responsible for their safety.

There are a lot of vehicles coming into our community," said Chief Bill Yeagley of Central Michigan University Police. "More vehicles than our roads are designed to handle so we want people to make good decisions."

All so fans could enjoy their tailgates and cheer on their beloved football teams as safely as possible.
