LANSING (WILX)-- It's an effort to ensure equal property rights protections for same-sex couples in Michigan.

Chris Swope and his partner Brad got married in Canada. Now they're taking their marriage certificate to the Register of Deeds office to be placed into their property records.

When they sell their property their marriage certificate will have to be "dealt with." It's unknown if the state would be forced to recognize the certificate.

The state has nothing that says same-sex couples can't place their marriage certificate into their property records, even though the state of Michigan will not recognize them as a married couple.
