A 61-year-old man caught growing thousands of marijuana plants in Lenawee County got probation instead of prison Tuesday, because the judge said the case "screamed out" for leniency.
Edwin Schmieding told police he was trying to grow medical marijuana, but many of the plants were small and low-quality.
He pleaded guilty and was expected to get five years in prison.
The judge went with probation after reading several letters from relatives and friends describing Schmieding as selfless.
