Authorities are searching for a convicted rapist who escaped from Wayne County sheriff's deputies during a hospital appointment in Detroit.
The Wayne County sheriff's office says 45-year-old Willie Wright fled from deputies following a struggle shortly after noon Tuesday at Harper Hospital. He's awaiting sentencing for raping his ex-girlfriend, then shooting her in the head.
Deputies used pepper spray on the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Wright, but he still managed to get away. He was wearing a dark green jail uniform and leg shackles.
Wright is considered dangerous and possibly armed. Sheriff's spokeswoman Paula Bridges says he was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault with intent to murder and using a firearm during a felony.
Search dogs were called in to check the area around the hospital.
