On Saturday at 12:10 AM Deputies with the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle accident on eastbound I-96 near Kent Street.
The investigation revealed that a Ford F150 truck, driven by a 57 year old Portland man, was eastbound, left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and came to a rest on its roof in the eastbound travel lanes.
A Ford Escape, driven by a 55 year old Grand Rapids man, struck the Ford F150. The driver of the Ford escape was transported to Sparrow Hospital and is currently in stable condition.
A 56 year old female, who was a passenger in the Ford Escape, was transported to Sparrow Hospital and is in critical condition.
The driver of the Ford F150 was pronounced dead at the scene.
All individuals involved were wearing safety belts. Names of the people are not being released until all the family has been notified.
The accident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office. It has not been determined if alcohol was involved of if there was other factor contributing to the crash.
