16-year-old Jordyn Wieber announced today that she is turning pro. It is a move that will allow her to pursue Olympic competition, but she gives up her collegiate eligibility. As a professional gymnast, Wieber can accept prize and endorsement money.

The DeWitt native is the U.S. gymnastics champion and recently won the individual world championship in Tokyo. She is a favorite for a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics.

Wieber made the announcement on her Facebook page saying "My parents and I believe this is best for me, and I am excited about pursuing my Olympic dream for the next nine months."
