Explosion Leaves Man Critically Injured

"Right now we don't know why the incident occurred, but it appears that the truck struck some piping associated with this oil well and there was a subsequent explosion. He was either trying to escape or mitigate the circumstances when he himself was severely injured in the fire."

A 32-year old man is in critical condition after an explosion and fire at an oil well in Jackson County's Leoni Township Wednesday evening.

It happened just after 6pm.

Authorities say it appears the man hit a gas line at West Bay Exploration, with his semi-truck, causing an explosion and fire.

He was airlifted to U of M Hospital with third degree burns all over his body.

Crews had to use foam and water to put out the fire.

Work is suspended in that area while authorities investigate.

Several agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency and MI OSHA are investigating.

Police have not yet released the man's name, but tell us he is from Farewell, Michigan.
