MONITOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- There's nothing sweet about the odor from a Michigan sugar company.

Michigan Sugar in Bay County acknowledges there's been a foul smell in the air as the company performs maintenance on its wastewater system. Sediment is being removed from ponds before the ponds are refilled.

State regulators recently sent a letter to the company asking how it plans to reduce the odor. Complaints have been coming in for two months. Air quality analyst Sharon LeBlanc says some people have been stirred out of sleep by the stink.

Michigan Sugar turns sugar beets into sugar. MLive.com says the company has apologized but the apology isn't satisfying critics.
