NOVI, Mich. (AP) -- Voters in a Detroit suburb will decide next week whether to update the city charter to make language in the document gender-neutral.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Novi's city charter, last revised in 1977, describes the clerk's duties using the phrase "he shall" at least eight times. The language in the document is there, however, even though Novi's city clerks have been women.
City Clerk Maryanne Cornelius said the time has come for the city of 55,000 to update the language to better reflect changing times.
If passed Nov. 5, the charter would in many cases simply drop the pronoun. Instead of saying "he shall," for example, the wording might say: "the clerk shall."
Several other Michigan communities have made similar changes.
