KALAMAZOO -- New details have emerged about the day a Kalamazoo police officer was fatally shot while responding to a late-night call.
Quoting a court document, the Kalamazoo Gazette reports Wednesday that a man accused of killing Officer Eric Zapata was drinking and playing the video game "Grand Theft Auto" on April 18. Zapata was killed when police responded to a call about shots fired at the home of Leonard Statler and brother Kim.
Police say Leonard Statler killed himself after shooting Zapata. Kim Statler has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The 32-year-old will remain behind bars while awaiting trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge Hugh Brenneman Jr. says the Statlers knew police would be called after shots were fired in the air at the home.
