National Farmer's Market Week Timely Following Cyclospora Outbreak

National Farmer's Market Week kicks off with a warning about fresh produce, in the wake of the cyclospora outbreak. The FDA says the salad mix that made so many people sick came from Mexico. Officials say the tainted salad was served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, in Iowa and Nebraska. And while FDA officials say they haven't found any problems with packaged salad being sold in grocery stores to consumers, they say this Farmer's Market Week is a reminder to consumers to be aware of where your food comes from. The goal of farmer's market week is to raise awareness about the benefits of locally grown food sold in neighborhoods nationwide.

Officials with the USDA say there has been an increase in farmer's markets due to consumer demand for locally grown food. In fact, Michigan is ranked fourth in the country for highest number of farmer's markets. We have 311 in the state. Farmer's market week continues through Saturday. There are local farmers markets in almost every local community including Lansing City Market, Holt Farmers Market, Grand Ledge, East Lansing and Downtown Jackson Grand River Farmer's Market. Experts say the best way to celebrate National Farmer's Market Week this week is to go your nearest farmer's market and meet your local farmers.
