Detroit police say a double-killing suspect had to try twice before authorities would arrest him.

Police say the 36-year-old man got in a dispute at a social gathering early Saturday and shot four men.

A police statement says men ages 23 and 37 died, and men ages 19 and 34 were seriously injured.

Police say the suspect went to a Detroit fire station about two hours later "and indicated that he was connected to the shooting."

But police say that "due to area patrols being busy handling high priority runs, no units were dispatched."

Police say the man then left the fire station and went to a police station, where officers arrested him.

The Associated Press left a message with police Sunday seeking an update on the case.
