Michigan Lawmakers Cut 1,000 DHS Jobs

Michigan Republicans have voted to eliminate funding for more than 1,000 workers in a state agency that handles welfare, food assistance and child abuse investigations.

Cuts approved Tuesday by a GOP-led House budget subcommittee would do away with nearly 9 percent of positions in the Department of Human Services. The budget is a stark contrast to the one proposed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

House Republicans say job cuts are necessary because they won't go along with Snyder's call to add a surcharge to power bills to cover emergency energy assistance for low-income customers.

Democrats say the budget is dangerous and could hurt Michigan's ability to have lower caseloads for workers required because of a lawsuit.

A Senate panel is expected to pass its human services budget in the afternoon.

Cutting workers who investigate child abuse? Well, at least they're being honest about their party's mantra that money is more important than kids-unless they're still in utero, of course.

If we would stop giving away the store to people who don't want to work then we wouldn't need the thousand workers. All the freeloaders would move to a better paying state.

More job loss here in Michigan, well it won't be to long and there will be no one here in Michigan or maybe even no one here at all.

I would think that the 1,000 DHS Workers were most likely playing games or web-surfing during the day anyway....Time to START CLEANING OUT the closet!!! Good job in hacking away at un-warranted DHS positions..... One step closer to welfare to work time huh. Now I can sleep better knowing that we have State Reps wanting to get the bleak State finance position back in order cuz I had to do that with my own budget.

What do the elected officials care if the case load is too much, they won't be doing the work. They can sit in the lush leather chairs and do nothing but joke around with others on the house floor and collect their salary.
