(WILX) Michigan Democrats have begun the fight to legalize same-sex marriages here in the state.

Democrats in the state Senate introduced bills Wednesday to repeal the 2004 prohibition on gay marriage.

Another bill introduced on Wednesday would recognize out of state same sex marriages as being legal in Michigan.

Democrats say polls show more Michigan residents are in support of gay marriage.

A dozen states currently recognize same-sex unions, while 30 states including Michigan ban it.

Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer of East Lansing is one of the sponsors of the legislation to repeal Michigan’s ban.

It could be an uphill battle on the bill to remove the ban; it would need two-thirds support in the Republican led House and Senate to make it onto a statewide ballot.
