Mission Statement

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Lawmakers have taken an initial step toward letting Michigan continue implementing more rigorous, uniform education standards.

The House Education Committee on Thursday voted 11-5 for a resolution to lift a "pause" on putting in place new national math and reading standards.

The standards demand critical thinking and problem solving that supporters say will move Michigan away from "mile wide, inch deep" teaching. But critics question the yardsticks and say they intrude into local control of schools.

The measure would reverse legislators' decision to block funding for the Common Core initiative in the budget that starts next week. The House could vote later in the day, while a Senate timeline is unclear.

Lawmakers asked for a report back by December reviewing new standardized testing options linked with the Common Core.
