McCowan Trial: Defense Lead Expert Denied Testimony

LANSING (WILX)-- A big blow to the defense in the Conner McCowan murder trial Friday. Attorneys wanted to put a doctor on the stand to testify about concussions, but the judge didn't allow it.

When someone has a concussion-- "they literally can't hold things in mind very well. In other words they can't juggle information internally. They can't manipulate things in their head so to speak," said Dr. Douglas Watt.

Dr. was was supposed to give that testimony, so it could've given weight to Conner's earlier description that he experienced concussion-like symptoms after Singler hit him seconds before the incident. But because the doctor can't prove with certainty that's what happened, he was sent packing before the jury came back from break.

What the jury did hear on Friday, was the rest of Conner McCowan's testimony, including a video of his emotionless reaction when he was first told Andrew Singler was dead.

SGT. ANDREW McCREADY: "I'm arresting your for homicide now,"
CONNER: "Okay."

McCowan says reason why he didn't seem to care on the video, was because he thought the police were lying.

"I thought they were trying to trick me into somehow saying something that might get me into trouble later," said McCowan.

But that wasn't the only evidence presented in court on Friday where McCowan seemed to lack a reaction. In a phone call between McCowan and his mother, where she confirmed that Singler was dead, he sounded much like he did in the video.

JUDY: "They said Andrew died,"
CONNER:" You know that for a fact?"
JUDY: "That's what Janice told Shay," said Judy.
CONNER: "Okay,"

In court McCowan pleaded with the jury to understand that he was sorry for what had happened.

The defense only has one more witness to bring to the stand, so the jury will be going into deliberation on Monday. Since the concussion expert was denied testimony, the defense is going to try bringing McCowan's high school athletic trainer in on Monday.
