LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Democrat Mark Schauer has officially jumped in the race for Michigan governor.

The former congressman from Battle Creek announced by email Tuesday that he has filed the paperwork to become a candidate for Michigan governor. He also launched his campaign website.

Schauer says Michigan needs a governor "who will protect the middle class and invest in education to create good jobs for Michigan workers." Schauer says Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has taken Michigan in the "wrong direction" by raising taxes on pensions and families and cutting funding for schools.

Snyder has not launched a re-election campaign, but is expected to do so later. Spokeswoman Sara Wurfel has said the governor is focusing his attention on "getting things done and bringing our state back."
