GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities say a man and a young child have died following a Grand Rapids house fire that authorities believe started in the basement.
Police tell The Grand Rapids Press the man died at the scene of the fire late Thursday and the child died after being taken to an area hospital for treatment.
A neighbor who noticed the fire called 911. Fire officials say the man was found in a living room in the front of the house and the child was in a second-floor bedroom.
Authorities say it didn't appear there were working smoke detectors in the home.
It was one of two fatal fires reported in a short period of time in Grand Rapids. Police say another man died following a fire reported early Friday at his apartment.
