Man Shot to Death in Jackson

Police have a 21-year-old man in custody, accused of murdering a man in his front yard.

Authorities responded to 140 W. Mansion St. at approximately 11:18 a.m. Saturday. An ambulance took 20-year-old Rakiesh Brown to Allegiance Health, where he later died.

Witnesses say everything happened quickly.

"The guy, he came over and put the gun to my cousin's chest," said Brown's nine-year-old cousin, who saw the altercation. "My cousin said, 'stop playing,' and then he shot him."

Eyewitnesses say they saw the suspect run across the street and around the corner.

Charity Waters was in her backyard on South St., a couple blocks from the crime scene, when she said she heard police arresting the suspect.

"I heard, 'Where's the gun? Where's the gun?'" she said. "And I came through the gate and I saw the two officers with the man down on our sidewalk and they put him in handcuffs and picked him up and put him in the back end of the police cars."

Family and neighbors watched the crime scene investigation from their front porches, sharing hugs and tears, mourning a man they said "wouldn't hurt a fly."

"Ra Ra's touched everybody's life," said Carmen Taylor, a family friend. "We're all family. Even though we may not be blood we're all family."

Neighbors said Brown would frequently spend time at their house whether to eat dinner, watch basketball, or play weekly games of kickball.

"He was a very generous, very giving person," said Walter Nuels, a neighbor and family friend.

Brown's family says it hopes to get justice.

"I hope he rots in jail and I want his family to feel the same pain we're feeling," said Yvette Hemphill, Brown's aunt. "But it's not going to be the same extent because they're going to get to go visit him. We're going to get to go visit a grave."

Police have not released the suspect's name. He is being held in Jackson County Jail.
