The armed man who barricaded himself and 4 others in an Aurelius Township home Thursday has been arraigned.

54-year-old DeWayne Eugene McKenzie was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence.

Deputies from the Ingham County Sheriff's Office responded to his home on Plains Road in Eaton Rapids (Aurelius Township) around 10am Thursday for a domestic assault.

Upon arrival, the suspect had barricaded himself in the house and was carrying a baseball bat. The suspect's wife told deputies there were 4 others inside, including her 4 and 6-year-old grandsons and her 18-year-old son.

The suspect was threatening to kill himself and his wife. He refused to cooperate and proceeded to destroy the inside of the house.

A state police ES team assisted and set up a perimeter around the home. After hours of negotiation, no headway was made.

All hostages were released around 1pm, as the suspect continued to threaten to kill himself and anyone who attempted to come inside.

The suspect was finally arrested around 5:30pm after warrants were obtained and police set off non-lethal munitions.

The suspect was then taken to Sparrow to be checked out before he was taken to jail.

To make a long story, short, I am extremely sorry to hear that the 4 and 6 year old grandchildren needed to witness their "grandfather" terrifying the family. We had a similar situation in our neighborhood about a year ago. It is very disturbing and upsetting to be witness to SWAT teams, armored vehicles and a very large cashe of armed police officers taking you from your home. Small children were involved in that incident as well. I may not be the best mother/grandmother the world has ever seen, but I would never do anything to put them in harms way. My job, if nothing else, is to do everything in my power to protect each and everyone of them. I hope more people feel the same.
