LANSING (WILX)-- Three major construction projects start Monday in mid-Michigan. The biggest is the Lake Lansing road bridge over US-127 near the Eastwood Towne Center.

The construction includes multiple lane closures and part time ramp closures, inconveniencing drivers and the people who own businesses there.

The orange barrels and flashing signs are ready to be set in place. Starting Monday M-DOT will start the second half of a two year bridge project. Drivers are warned to expect delays.

US-127 will have two lanes in both directions open for traffic during the day, with possible lane closures during the night and weekends. There will be a period where US-127 traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction for a total of 7 days.

Westbound Lake Lansing Road will have two lanes open, but eastbound will be reduced to one lane. There will also be short-term closures of the ramps during construction.

Businesses nearby could lose thousands in what is scheduled to be a 4 - 6 month construction time.

"Our biggest concern is people start avoiding the area because they perceive backups that may not be there," said Steve Montanye of the Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe.

To try to keep business going strong, owners are planning on getting inventive with advertisement, and re routing if possible.

"The economy continues to be a challenge. We need to do everything we can to encourage and retail business in particular," said Montanye.

New auxiliary lanes will also be added along southbound US-127 this year . Starting this spring M-DOT will be adding an auxiliary lane between Lake Lansing Road and M-43, and between M-43 and the I-496 Interchange. The new auxiliary lanes will ease traffic flow and congestion through the corridor, and improve safety for motorists. Construction for the auxiliary lanes will close the ramp form M-43 to southbound US-127, and a detour will be posted. The ramp is expected to close mid-May and reopen by late August.
