MSU Police are encouraging students to take extra precautions after a student was attacked last week.

The incident happened early Saturday, September 14 near Lot 29 at the intersection of Akers Road and Shaw Lane. Police say the 18-year-old student was walking to her residence hall around 1am when she said a man came out of the bushes, grabbed her from behind and placed his hands over her mouth.

The woman was able to mace the man and get away. She was not injured. The student described the suspect as a black man. Police said the student was only able to see the suspect’s arm and was unable to provide any additional description.

MSU police are asking anyone who was in the area and may have seen anything to call (517) 355-2222.

Here are some safety tips from the MSU Police:
**Call 911 if you are in danger.
**Walk in well-lit areas if possible.
**Be aware of your surroundings and others in the area.
**Realize that listening to headphones or iPods or talking on your cell while walking decreases your awareness of your surroundings.
**Walk with others when possible.
