Local Hospital Cutting Staff

Ingham Regional Medical Center announced Thursday that it will reduce it workforce by five to seven percent. That means the Lansing hospital will cut up to 150 positions.

Ingham says it will begin informing affected employees on Monday and the changes will be taking effect over the next few weeks.

Details of the reduction were in a written release issued Thursday morning. The reason for the cuts were explained this way:

"The economic downturn that has been prevalent in other industries has had a corresponding negative effect on the health care sector for the entire greater Lansing area. Hospital discharges in the tri-county area were down from the previous year, representing the first significant overall marketplace volume decline in recent years. Declining reimbursements and an increase in charity care have also added to the challenges in the market. "

The hospital says the cuts will be in administrative, managerial and clinical areas of the hospital, but "Nationally accepted clinical staffing ratios will be maintained to insure a high-level of patient care."

I work for IRMC's competition but I hate to see ANYONE lose their jobs. I find it ridiculous that IRMC spent ALLLLL that money to add onto the place and now they have to lay people off. IRMC seems to have a reputation for failing to mind their fiscal house. I hope those folks who get laid off can find work quickly.

Would someone inform Lansing's mayor that income tax revenues will be down as a result of these lost jobs at IRMC. Perhaps they will need a 5 mill property tax increase now.

They can buy a bunch of offices but they can't afford people to run them. Another case of CEO's making wise decisions.
