LANSING (WILX)-- When you take your kids to the playground you probably assume it's safe, but maybe not.

A playground behind Kendon Elementary in Lansing has some local moms concerned. It's missing pieces, rusted, and doesn't have any mulch for protection. It's been out of commission for the students, but not the neighbors; there's nothing stopping kids from playing on it.

Pauline Quagliata is one of the moms looking to make the playground more safe. Recently it's become her oldest daughter's favorite place to play, and despite Quagliata's concerns she's having a hard time keeping her daughter away.

"We come over here once or twice a week. My daughters almost three, and she doesn't like the little toys anymore. Plus, this is the only one with a slide," said Quagliata.

Without something to soften a landing, and with sharp edges that could cause bodily harm, the playground doesn't meet U.S. Product Safety Standards.

"I don't like her to play on it because it's dangerous. There's a missing bridge, rusty pieces, there's no mulch, and glass everywhere," said Quagliata.

The playground puts the Lansing School District at risk.

"You have liability issues if not maintaining parks or playground properly," said Brett Kaschinske, Director of Lansing Parks and Recreation.

Kaschinske knows all about the importance of playground safety, he oversees 75 playgrounds for the city.

"With the number of playgrounds we have and the (Lansing School District) has there's going to be breaks. It's a matter of getting things fixed," said Kaschinske.

Fixing the Kendon playground falls on the Lansing School District. They can bring it up to code or tear it down, but Quagliata says she's hoping they can save it.

"If they tear it down I'll be fundraising to put up a new one," said Quagliata.

Spokesperson for the Lansing School District Bob Kolt said that he's looking into what's being done about the playground. We'll let you know what the district plans to do.
