LANSING - The city of Lansing is starting its gun buyback program this coming Saturday. 1 gun = $100 Meijer gift card. 1 assault weapon = $150 Meijer gift card. That's the equation. It's called the Guns for Groceries program. A press release from the mayor's office and the Lansing police department says firearms will be accepted "no questions asked" on Saturday, August 18, from 10am-2pm at the Tabernacle of David Worship Center located at 2645 W. Holmes Road in Lansing (near the southwest corner of Holmes and Pleasant Grove roads).

Eligible firearms include handguns (ie: revolvers, semi-automatics) and long guns (ie: shotguns, rifles and assault weapons). BB guns, pellet guns and toy guns will also be accepted but will not be eligible for a gift card. All handguns turned in at the collection point must be enclosed in a clear plastic container and transported to the site in a legal manner (unloaded, locked in the trunk of a vehicle). Long guns must be unloaded, in a sealed case and transported legally. Only firearms determined by LPD personnel to be in working order will be accepted. Licensed gun dealers as well as active duty and retired police officers are excluded from participating in the program.

Individuals can turn in their firearms without fear of being charged with illegal possession of an unregistered firearm.

The gift cards are being funded by private donations.

All firearms accepted by the program will be destroyed.
