"It's really great for the Korean-American children to kind of have a role model to look up to be like 'wow, like I can do that, even through I'm a minority and in this state where I am, I can achieve great things."

Abbey Smith - PR Coordinator

Kids at a Korean Culture Camp got a lesson today with a State Lawmaker.

Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood was born in South Korea and came to the US when he was adopted.

He later became the first Korean-American to hold state office in Michigan.

Hopgood told the kids to do their best and camp organizers say he was exactly who the kids needed to hear from.

The Korean Culture Camp happens every year.

Dozens of Korean-American kids come from around the state to learn about their heritage.
