When you think of an Olympic athlete, the word “normal” doesn’t come to mind. But that’s how Jordyn Wieber’s family describes her.

“She’s a pretty standard teenager, she really is,” said Rita Wieber, Jordyn’s mother. “She loves fashion and she loves shopping. She likes purses and shoes and makeup. She loves Twitter and Instagram. She does all the normal teenage stuff.”

“She’s a little more busy than a normal kid,” said Wieber’s brother, Ryan. “But she does her homework, she hangs out with friends. She likes to just chill and have fun.”

Younger sister, Kyra, says Jordyn gives her advice about friends, and they like to go shopping together. Pretty normal sister stuff, she says, except for when they go to the mall and Jordyn gets asked for autographs.

“We make it kind of fun,” said Kyra Wieber. “Sometimes when we go shopping, we’ll count how many people notice her, stare at her, something like that.”

We asked Jordyn’s older sister, Lindsay, what would surprise us about her younger sister.

“I just learned this about her,” said Lindsay Wieber. “She hates feet. If you touch her with feet, she was freaking out about it. We were out at the pool and my other sister, Kyra—her feet touched her and she started freaking out about her feet, which is so weird because they’re barefoot all the time in the gym.”

Kyra Wieber says Jordyn has more fun than we might think.
“People think that she doesn’t have a big social life,” says the 12-year-old. “You would think that she spends like every single hour of her life in the gym. But on the weekends and stuff, she hangs out with her friends, she hangs out with me and my sister and stuff. So she’s not spending like her whole life in the gym.”

The final night of the women's trials starts Sunday night. We’ll have much more coming up tonight on News 10. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
