A Marine from Michigan has been killed in a traffic crash near Camp Pendleton in California.
Lance Cpl. Zackery Johnston's family and the San Diego County medical examiner's office say the 21-year-old from Jackson County died Saturday night when a car hit him and a fellow Marine as they crossed Interstate 5 in Oceanside. His passenger was in critical condition.
Jim Johnston tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot his son graduated from Concord High School in 2009 and shipped off to boot camp in July of that year. He had been stationed at Camp Pendleton since October 2009.
Zackery Johnston was to deploy for Afghanistan in January 2012 as a light artillery mechanic.
His father says Johnston "wanted to protect people."
Memorial and funeral services are planned in Michigan.
