An 8th grader from R. W. Kidder Middle School in Jackson is in competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland this week.

Adrienne Fisher is one 11 students from Michigan and one of 281 spellers from all over the world participating in the annual competition. The 14-year-old spends a lot of her free time practicing her music, as she plays in the school band and sings in the choir. She's also a regular on the school's Honor Roll.

Today, contestants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee are taking the preliminary test, which includes a vocabulary section this year. Spellers arrived Tuesday morning to take a 45-minute computer test that probes their knowledge of both spelling and vocabulary. The results will be combined with Wednesday's on-stage round to determine which spellers will advance to the semifinals Thursday.

Preliminaries will air Wednesday on ESPN 3, with semifinals to follow on Thursday on ESPN 2. The finals will air Thursday night at 8pm on ESPN.
