A recent wave of violent crime in one Jackson neighborhood has left a family on edge.

Ash Smith and her family live near First and High St. in Jackson and she said the number of violent crimes happening recently near their home has them worried.

"It's not getting better, it's getting worse," Smith said. "I'm scared and honestly I get scared to sleep in my own bed at night and I get scared to sleep in my house."

Smith said since Memorial Day when a 13-year-old was shot near their home, there's been about half a dozen incidents from shootings to stabbings.

The most recent incident, a stabbing, occurred Tuesday night near the 1800 block of Francis St.

"It's not like it's just one random thing or they're accidents that are taking place," she said. "It's people shooting with intent and that's not okay."

It's not just the Smith's neighborhood, Jackson City Council member Andrew Frounfelker said he held a community meeting recently to address what appears to be a widespread issue.

"I took it upon myself to have that 'let's get out in front of this' type meeting to get the residents involved," he said. "To let them know we are actually aware of this and that we're doing something about it."

Frounfelker said they're now working with neighborhoods across the city to set up watch groups and they're working closely with police to step up patrols in problem areas.

"To really fight crime it's not just police versus bad guys, the neighbors have to be involved in this also," he said. "We don't want people feeling like they have to lock themselves into their home because of some bad individuals."
