Internet Sales Tax in Michigan Moves Forward

Lansing, Mich. -- The House Committee on Tax Policy has recommended a pair of bills that would increase the number of companies charging Michigan customers online sales tax.

The committee recommended the bills with 9 yes votes. Representative Aric Nesbitt, a Republican from Lawton was the only committee member to vote No on each bill. Representative Pat Somerville a Republican from New Boston voted no on House Bill 4203, but yes on 4202. To see the entire vote breakdown look at the bottom of this article.

The House Tax Policy committee consists of 10 Republicans and 5 Democrats.

Wednesday Democrats sent out a press releases saying they are proud of their support of the bills because they level the playing field by treating online-only stores and traditional businesses equally.

The Department of Treasury estimates last year the state would have received $460 million more dollars from Michiganders if online retailers charged the tax.

The House Fiscal Agency says big online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Overstock are able to avoid the sales tax by eliminating affiliate partners and warehouses in Michigan. The agency says it is unlikely the bills will generate much revenue unless federal legislation is enacted.
