Hundreds Remember Eaton Rapids HS Senior In Gymnasium Memorial Service

As friends, teachers and family remembered 18-year-old Devin Gauna, Saturday, their words were met with tears and laughter.

"Don't worry, son, you don't need a diploma where you are," said one speaker.

Gauna, a senior at Eaton Rapids High School, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a type of cancer, 14 months ago. It was only two weeks ago that he gave his best friend Wyatt Howard the heartbreaking news.

"He told me, he might not make it," said Howard.

Gauna passed away, Tuesday, at University of Michigan Hospital.

A star on the high school football team, Gauna's teammates, led by Howard, wore their jerseys in his honor during Saturday's service, which was held to the Eaton Rapids High School gym to accommodate everyone.

"He was a phenomenal kid," said Bob Ribby, Gauna's former football coach. "He was the type of kid that you want your kids to grow up like."

Devin's sister, Natasha, says it was Devin's selflessness to the very end that touched so many lives.

"He said he didn't want this to happen to anybody else and we needed to do whatever it took," she said. "I will always have a role model and an inspiration to live by."

Gauna had his own message for girlfriend Janna Wing.

"He said, 'I'll be in your heart forever'," said Wing.

Gauna donated his body to research, so there will be no burial.
He is the cousin of MSU basketball player, Alex Gauna.
