LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan residents without a job could put their unemployment benefits at risk by doing illegal drugs.

Legislation approved 82-24 Thursday by the state House could disqualify people from receiving jobless benefits if they fail a drug test required by a prospective employer.

Employers would not be mandated to report when job applicants fail drug tests. But if they do provide the information to the state, job applicants not hired because of a failed drug test would lose their benefits.

Recipients also would be cut off if employers report that they refused to take a drug test.

The bill now heads to the Senate. It's part of a broader package of legislation dealing with unemployment insurance fraud.
