Haslett L&L Closing Worries Businesses

Shoppers scurried in and out of their neighborhood store for the last time, some to say good bye and others to take advantage.

"We knew this store was closing, so we came to get the deals," said Teju Mokashi, an L&L shopper.

"We are like everybody else, we do some shopping here, some at Wal-mart, some at Meijer," said another customer Pete Holz.

It's the noncommittal shopper creating low sales numbers. The L&L spokesperson says the Haslett store is now a drain on existing stores. With 15 interested buyers, it's best to move the merchandise to the busy L&L off Marting Luther King. Closing the doors isn't the best idea to everyone.

"I live across the street. I know a lot of people that will be affected by it because they don't have cars either and they rely on this place," said Spencer Fortin, who lives in Haslett and shops at L&L.

With more than a dozen vacant locations in Haslett Village Square, businesses are worried that losing L&L will mean losing customers.

"L&L is the anchor store here. It brings a lot of foot traffic so we are certainly concerned with them closing," said neighboring business owner Cheryl Savage or Tiny Town Trading Co.

Smaller store owners say they rely on the publicity L&L brought to the plaza.

"I would stop at the sub shop and hardware store," said shopper Jean Roll.

But now they'll take their shopping elsewhere.

"Whatever is convenient, whatever is open and wherever I'm going to," said Roll.

So, they can do all of their errands in one run. The real estate company that owns Haslett Village Square, CB Richard Ellis, says it hopes to fill the L&L location soon, but won't prioritize that over any other of its vacant spots. The company says it wants to hold out for the "right" business

Not a shocker that was closing. They never had many people go there and plus their prices were SUPER HIGH. Something will come there in the near future.
