Gun Control Debate Heats Up

Doug Carl has been the owner of Total Firearms in Mason for 29 years. Like most, he was devastated when he hear 26 people were shot and killed in a Connecticut elementary school, including 20 students.

"It's just horror, everyone's heartbroken," said Carl. "It's just a sick individual that tore the guts out of this country."

While many people are calling for more gun control, Carl says legislation banning the ability to carry a concealed weapon wouldn't do anything to help.

"It makes absolutely zero sense," said Carl. "If someone would have been there with a firearm, there may have been far fewer bodies coming out of that school."

Robert Bianchi, a Cooley Law School student, agrees with Carl. In fact, he thinks it has less to do with guns and more to do with mental health.

"In the end, I think it just comes down to intent," said Bianchi. "Whether it's a gun, a knife, a bomb, they're going to find the means to do whatever they need to carry it out."

Carl also blames shootings like this on the constant media attention they get.

"They get their name in the news," said Carl. "That's how they want to go out, in a blaze of glory. They go crazy, they don't care."

No matter what the reason behind these incidents, Bianchi says he's curious to see where the debate on gun control goes from here.

"There's good points on both sides of the issue and hopefully, we'll meet somewhere in the middle."

Mariah. It says you live in Bath. The worst school killing in the histoy of the U.S. was committed there. There were no guns taken into the school yet like 41 kids were killed with explosives. Please help us understand how the right to bear arms would of affected that? The problem is that there are too many looking past the known facts. This was a theft and a homocide. It is also a horrible example of what can happen when someone snaps. If there was no access to firearms, it would of been something else.

For those referencing the "fore fathers". Well, remember a "musket" at the time they wrote the document was the most lethal form of weaponry in the world. To say they were feared in Europe would be an understatement. Airguns, and they did exist were banned in England and were known as the "assassins rifle". The 2nd stands to allow us, citizens, to combat undue federal power. It is our responsibility. So they did intend for people to have muskets at the time and no doubt other weapons as time went on. Moreover, the forefathers never would have envisioned the scope and size of government today either. So can we expect to check gov't power with muskets? No. No doubt they would have been shocked today. Shocked that gov't is so powerful and citizens are so vulnerable. Know your history.

Why is it we never see GOOD STORIES where little old ladies knock off a would be home-invasion robber as he thinks they are easy pickens. More like inviting the robber for some HOT-LEAD PIE for SUPPER. How come we never hear about being being held up and when the robbers says give me your wallet the folks being robbed both pull out a Glock and say NOT TODAY.

Mariah; I know what you mean you can't agrue with stupid and unfortunately there is no pill to cure it either. Maybe these people think the founding fathers were able to see what life was like in the future and wrote the constitution accordingly.

With all of this talk on guns I decided to get my permit as of late and had to wait in a line at the County as if it were a Walmart on the day before Christmas. Folks my thought to purchase a weapon is not me being alone doing this effort. When I went shopping for a handgun it was like the ol-Kmart Blue Light Special days waiting to get waited on at the gun shop. Folks what I have been feeling and witnessing over the past few days is the 2nd Amendment in Action. Too bad our fore-fathers didn't put a clause in that the RED-TAPE slow down just just a tad to even get a handgun isn't a big deal. None-the-less it was fun to go shopping for a handgun and I hope I don't get forced to use it by some yahoo-punk kid trying to make a name for himself. NUF-SAID

Mariah the other 9 of the first ten amendments were ratified the same day. But I guess those are outdated and need to be changed as well. You know, because of the current geopolitical environment. Lets start with the 3rd considering we are so unsafe. We are in time of war so lets pass a law so soldiers are quartered with citizens. They can start with your place. Next lets go to the fourth seeing how every Tom, Dick, Cindy and Harry are packing heat. Because this has proven so unsafe, lets let the police kick in any door at any time for any reason. You appear to be a smart person judging by your post, or at least you are good with google, so I imagine you are seeing where I am going with this. Think before you start attacking one amendment with your liberal propaganda.

And when the second amendment is gone Mariah, next will be the freedom you use to dictate to others what they should be doing. Yes times have changed, but tyrants are still tyrants and bad people still exist. The current geopolitical climate you know so much about has just created more of them. Mass shootings have remained relatively unchanged in the past 35 years. During this time the assault weapons ban was in place.
