Lansing's Board of Water and Light says containment and cleanup efforts along the Grand River are continuing to progress. Wednesday BWL brought in a vacuum truck specially equipped to remove oil from the water.
The utility says it believes that it has removed most of the oil spilled from its Eckert Power Plant.
BWL says its investigation reveals that the incident took place at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday when equipment malfunctioned allowing oil to spill and overflow a containment area.
A boom for containing and absorbing oil was in place on the river near Cherry Hill Part by 1:30 a.m. Monday. Two additional booms have been stretched across the river.
The BWL is working closely with both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Environmental Quality who also have personnel onsite to consult on the cleanup.
