FLINT, Mich. (AP) -- The great-grandsons of General Motors founder William "Billy" Durant have helped immortalize their forebear in bronze.
The Flint Journal reports that Daniel "Duke" Durant Merrick and Gordon Merrick were on hand for Saturday's unveiling of Durant's statue. About 100 people attended the event that helped kick off the city's annual Back to the Bricks car show.
The sculpture of Durant is placed in a downtown plaza between automotive giants Louis Chevrolet and David Buick.
GM North America President Mark Reuss used the occasion to detail the automaker's purchase of the Durant-Dort Carriage Co. factory. He says the company plans to invest millions of dollars to restore the historic facility and is working with local academic and cultural institutions.
The show features thousands of classic and vintage vehicles.
