The Capital Area Humane Society has received a huge grant to help address cat overpopulation in the city of Lansing.

The $135,020 grant from PetSmart Charities will allow the Humane Society to provide no-cost spay and neuter surgeries over the next two years, or until the funding is gone.

To take advantage of the grant, cat owners must live in the 48906, 48912, 48915 and 48933 zip codes ONLY. In 2011, CAHS got a similar grant to help people in the 48910 and 48911 zip codes, allowing them to spay and neuter 2,849 cats.

All cats and kittens must be at least eight weeks old and weigh at least two pounds. Rabies vaccines and microchips are included at the time of surgery, if needed.

Residents must show proof of address to qualify and call 517-908-0756 to make an appointment. Appointments will be scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and will take place at the Spay and Neuter Clinic located at 5919 South Cedar Street in Lansing.
