Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is asking a judge to send him back to state prison.
Kilpatrick is in federal prison in Milan for a probation violation in a state case that forced him out of office in 2008. But the only reason he's there is to be close to the Detroit area where he is awaiting trial on federal corruption charges.
Attorney James Thomas says moving Kilpatrick back to state prison is necessary as he tries to win parole in a few months.
Thomas says the transfer request should be routine. Kilpatrick is scheduled to appear before a federal judge on Wednesday.
