MERIDIAN TWP - Fire destroys a 13,000 square foot home being built in Meridian Township Friday morning. A neighbor called the fire department shortly after 5 o'clock in the morning. Meridian Township's fire chief says that the large brick-frame home on Caberet Trail in Okemos was 90% engulfed in the flames when firefighters arrived. A ladder truck from East Lansing fire Department had to be called in to assist in putting the fire down. The fire was under control in about an hours time, but crews remained on the scene into the afternoon. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire chief says it may be some time before they are able to determine what happened, due to the extent of the damage and size of the building. No one was injured fighting the blaze.
No one was living in the home at the time. Construction was nearly complete when it was destroyed by the fire. Firefighters say the family was expected to move in in March.
