For as long as Loletta Duvall has lived on high street in Lansing fireworks have been a nuisance for her.

"After hours, we get a lot of them," said Duvall. "I lost one dog because of fireworks. It ran when the neighbors set them off."

That's why she wasn't surprised to hear fireworks were found at the site of a house fire just down the street. Steve Mazurek with the Lansing Police Department says they're responsible for a couple structure fires, each year, because people aren't aware of their surroundings.

"Know where that firework may go. Don't be firing it off into a vacant building or an abandoned structure," said Mazurek. "If you're going to be having family and friends over, keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby."

There's also the issue of noise, which new Lansing ordinance is hoping to fight.

"From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., it will be illegal to shoot off fireworks," said Mazurek. "If we get reports of them, people are violating this, they probably will be issued a citation."

The ordinance also states fireworks can only be shot off on holidays or one day before and after. The city of DeWitt has similar rules in place, but Chief Bruce Ferguson says his department has already received noise complaints, this year.

"With fireworks, it's a love-hate relationship," he said. "On a holiday and you bring the family down and they're going off, they're wonderful. If you're trying to get your kids to bed, you ten to not appreciate them as much."

Ferguson says letting your neighbors know before you shoot off fireworks could save you anywhere from 100 to 250 dollars. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
