For family, the tragedy is still setting in.

Late Saturday afternoon, emergency vehicles were called to the home of a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy on South Jackson Street in Liberty Township.
Police say, a four-year-old boy had accidentally shot himself. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to Cammy Rose, the boy was the son of Deputy Mark Easter.

"My heart is broken for my cousin," said Rose, who is the cousin of Easter's wife, Melissa. "He was definitely taken from this world too early."

Lon Zicafoose lives across the street from the Easters. He says the deputy had just left for work when it happened and quickly returned.

"Bolted in the house. A couple minutes later, he came back out and was noticeably distraught," he said.

Now, Michigan State Police are leading to the investigation, trying to figure out exactly how this happened.

"We are conducting a further investigation, pulling our resources together to make sure that we are detailed," said Sgt. Cathy Fitzgerald, of Michigan State Police Jackson Post. "We suspect no foul play at this time."

Jackson County Sheriff Steven Rand told News 10 over the phone that his department is not involved in the investigation, but is devastated by what happened.

Until the investigation is through, Rose says those who don't know the family shouldn't speculate.

"Parents blame themselves when their kids get hurt," said Rose. "Mark's a good guy. I know this wasn't intentional."

If this had been somebody other than a cop, he would be charged with manslaughter. But, the thin blue line lets a cop get away with anything. He'll probably get a promotion for this.
