ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- The National Geographic Society and University of Michigan are holding a free lecture this week about field research and exploration.

The Friday evening lecture at the Ann Arbor university's Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre will feature Mayan archaeologist William Saturno and alpine climber Mark Synnott. Also scheduled to speak is John Francis, National Geographic's vice president of research, conservation and exploration.

The lecture comes the day before a free workshop for aspiring scientists between 18 and 25. It's designed for those who want to pursue research, exploration or conservation field projects supported by National Geographic's Young Explorers Grants Program.
