Disasters in Australia and foul weather in other sugar growing nations have driven up prices worldwide.
That's been good for many U.S. farmers, who can pay off loans and buy new equipment.
But some candy lovers will have a less happy Valentine's Day.
Evans Creole Candy Factory in New Orleans raised prices in late November for the first time in about eight years -- from under $15 to almost $19 for a box of 10 pralines.
Owner Jaye Cuccia says she uses 200 to 400 pounds of sugar a week and the price for a 50-pound bag has doubled from a year ago.
A spokeswoman for the National Confectioners Association says small candy makers are most likely to be affected by the increase in sugar prices.
